Forged in the rugged hills of the wettest place in England, we have more than 20 years’ experience of playing dirty in the mud. It’s our natural habitat, our number one testing ground, our home.
Our first-ever shoe – the MUDROC™ 290 – was built for fell and mountain runners who wanted light, natural-feel footwear with aggressive grip for soft, muddy, unpredictable terrain.
Two decades on, mud-hungry shoes remain a fundamental part of our overall range.
The Off-Road Options
The simplest way to differentiate our shoes – and thus understand which are best for mud – is to look at the grip patterns of each collection:
MUDTALON™ - The Mud Specialist
Pointed 8mm long lugs pierce and grip into all soft ground and mud, no matter how steep the gradient.
TRAILTALON™ - The Versatile All-Rounder
Chiselled 6mm long lugs grip tight into all soft ground and ride smooth over hard-packed trails.
TRAILFLY™ - The Hard-Ground Specialist
Flatter 4mm long lugs cut through top-layer debris to grip to hard-packed trails underneath and ride super-smooth.

The Returning Heroes
Fresh out of the INOV8 Hall of Fame in 2026, comes the return of two classic muddy running shoes.
The X-TALON™ 212 and MUDCLAW™ 300 owned the muddy fells and mountains for decades before their retirement.
In truth, retirement never really suited this dynamic duo, so we’ve brought them back for a limited time only.
Both shoes have pointed 8mm long lugs, a classic locked-in fit, and a narrower toe area.

Focusing On The MUDTALON™
First launched in 2024, our MUDTALON™ shoes splice together the best features of our older mud-hungry models from the MUDROC™, MUDCLAW™ and X-TALON™ collections.
The MUDTALON™ shoes have incredible grip, great drainage, and a new NATURALFIT™ design that locks in the heel and midfoot while also allowing the forefoot the room it needs to perform as nature intended.
There are three shoes in the MUDTALON™ collection, all sharing the exact same outsole, similar lightweight uppers, but differing in levels of drop (heel to toe differential) and cushioning.
All three shoes were updated in 2025, with the V2 models boasting improved grip on wet rock, more drainage points, and even better midfoot lockdown.
All now also come in both Precision Fit and Wide Fit for a preferred width across the toe-box.
For a zero-drop natural feel, allowing feet to connect closely to the terrain underneath.
Drop: 0mm | Midsole Stack: 12mm / 12mm | Weight: 238g
For a fast, nimble racing feel, allowing feet to propel quickly through the gait.
Drop: 4mm | Midsole Stack: 11mm / 7mm | Weight: 240g
For a more cushioned feel, allowing feet more comfort on longer runs and races.
Drop: 6mm | Midsole Stack: 18mm / 12mm | Weight: 259g

Focusing On The TRAILTALON™
For those who run trails rather than fells or mountains and encounter a bit less mud and steep ground, our TRAILTALON™ shoes could be your perfect choice for playing dirty.
They share the same NATURALFIT™ design as the MUDTALON™ but have more versatile 6mm long lugs - shaped like mountain goat hooves - and uppers that give greater protection.
There are five models in the TRAILTALON™ collection, all sharing the exact same outsole, similar uppers, but differing in levels of drop (heel to toe differential) and cushioning.
All also come in both Standard Fit and Wide Fit for a preferred width across the toe-box.
For a zero-drop natural feel, allowing feet to connect closely to the terrain underneath.
Drop: 0mm | Midsole Stack: 12mm / 12mm | Weight: 270g
For a fast, nimble racing feel, allowing feet to propel quickly through the gait.
Drop: 4mm | Midsole Stack: 11mm / 7mm | Weight: 270g
For a more cushioned feel, allowing feet more comfort on longer runs and races.
Drop: 6mm | Midsole Stack: 18mm / 12mm | Weight: 310g
For the same feel as the TRAILTALON™ but with waterproof protection allowing feet to stay dry.

For a far more cushioned feel, allowing feet more comfort in ultra-distance runs.
